School of Pharmacy Focuses on HIV\AIDS Medications

The University of Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy recently released information thanking the donor who provided their pharmacy school with a piece of modern equipment to help in the fight against aids.

Pharmacists are critical players in the treatment of HIV and AIDS-related diseases around the world, and such technology is detrimental in establishing an advanced education in this specialized field of study at pharmacy schools.

The pharmacy school was given an ACQUITY TQD System by the Waters Corporation that will help train students on just one of many technologies they may be asked to use in their careers. The ACQUITY TQD System is a mass spectrometer and liquid chromatograph that will advance studies in the treatment of AIDS-related diseases and HIV. The pharmacy school here is the only one in New York’s State University system and is widely known to be a leader in this type of study.

Prescription medications are a fundamental part of HIV and AIDS treatments, so pharmacists must be very well-versed in the use, strength, and composition of medications. Students in pharmacy school learn to understand that each person responds differently to medications and that the specific concoction of HIV\AIDS medications is critical to the health of these patients.

Pharmacists are the point of contact in matters relating to medication use, safety, and side-effects throughout the course of drug therapy and have to be ready to answer questions about myriad issues that may come up for these patients.

The ACQUITY TQD System at the University of Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy is now residing in the pharmacy school’s HIV Clinical Pharmacology Lab and will be used by the students there as well as those studying under the University of Zimbabwe AIDS International Training and Research Program, a partnership that is supported by the National Institute of Health and the Fogarty International Center.
