Pharmacy Technician Classes in Lifelong Learning Program

A Michigan college is adding pharmacy technician training to its growing list of technical certificates, providing a gateway for community members to work in the industry or move on to pharmacy school.

Kellogg Community College is based in Battle Creek, Michigan and made the announcement recently that it will add pharmacy technician classes as well as phlebotomy technician classes to the curriculum.

The affordable pharmacy technology classes will commence on March 19th and will cost students less than $1,000 including materials and tuition. The classes will conclude on May 14th and will encompass the 50-hours of class time required by Michigan’s Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Graduates from the certificate program will then be eligible to take the test for certification.

Graduates of pharmacy technician classes learn about dosing, dispensing, and inventory control in a pharmacy environment. Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of a PharmD pharmacist in order to carry out the operations of pharmacies in hospitals, medical facilities, and retail outlets for prescription medications.

The duties of a pharmacy technician are also covered in the classes, which includes a working knowledge of terms and definitions, brand name to generic named drug conversion, dosing conversions, IV administration doses, and more.

While most pharmacy technicians enter the labor force to work in a traditional pharmacy environment, graduates of pharmacy classes may also go on to work in long-term health care facilities, manufacturing companies, insurance companies, teaching, and government contracted assistants in a variety of environments. While pharmacy technician classes cover the most common knowledge necessary, some specialist positions require additional training.

The pharmacy classes are hosted by Kellogg Community College through the Lifelong Learning Program. The college was established in 1956 and delivers custom training services to area businesses and individuals, in addition to independent education programs such as the one offered through the pharmacy technician classes.
