Pharmacy Schools Take Part in Medicine Adherence Challenge

The only public pharmacy school in Missouri recently won the first ever National Challenge Award for its efforts in the Script Your Future Medication Adherence Challenge.

Script Your Future is an organization that helps patients manage their health care issues through education and assistance with understanding how their medications work to improve their health and provides tools to help them track their prescription goals.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of pharmacy was one of the winners of the contest sponsored by the organization in February. Script Your Future’s competition was all about educating the public on the importance of taking their medications as they are directed and how doing so can significantly improve their health . According to the organization, nearly 125,000 deaths every year happen because people failed to take medication as directed.

Over 40,000 students from pharmacy schools around the United States helped to provide important information such as this to 250,000 people living with health conditions for which they must take regularly scheduled medications or treatments. The challenge happened in October of last year and the winners were just announce in February by the National Association of Drug Stores Foundation, the National Consumers League, and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

The other pharmacy schools that placed in the competition included the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, the Harding University College of Pharmacy, Creighton University School of Pharmacy and Health Professions, and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine School of Pharmacy.  Each school was awarded for their performance in specific competition categories that included target marketing, social media, and a national challenge award.

Students of the pharmacy school at UMKC were awarded the National Challenge Award for their participation in conducting one-on-one counseling sessions in the Kansa City region at a variety of locations.
