Pharmacy School Holds Blood Drive

Students at a pharmacy school in Hawaii are holding a blood drive in their community this weekend.

The University of Hawaii’s pharmacy school will be in Campus Center 301 on January 23rd from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the main campus.

This is the third year that the pharmacy school is hosting a blood drive in their community. The Hawaii blood bank estimates that 60% of the people in the state will need blood at some point in their lives, even though only 2% donation their blood toward this need. Blood donations are important to saving lives during emergency medical treatments and in cases of some medical conditions. According to a press release by the pharmacy school, they want to collect 125 pints of blood this year.

Students in pharmacy schools understand the value of blood donations due to their studies in emergency and follow-up pharmacy care for all sorts of medical conditions. Anemia, childbirth, automobile accident victims, and people with certain rare blood disorders may have an emergency need for blood transfusion. At pharmacy school, students learn that the body replaces lost blood within 24-hours, that the human body can safely give away a pint of blood every 56 days, and that most people are not affected by giving blood.

Similar blood drives are hosted by pharmacy schools across the nation. The University of Wisconsin’s pharmacy school held a similar blood drive back in September and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill pharmacy school will hold a blood drive next month.

Keshia Mahi-Leopoldino is a student at the pharmacy school in Hawaii and says that most people fail to recognize the value of their donations. “Many people don’t realize the huge impact just one donation can make. Many first-time donors are scared and that’s expected, but when these donors sign up for another donation, it becomes life-changing,” she said.
