Pharmacy School Considers Midway Campus

A pharmacy school from West Virginia is creating an opportunity for students from an underserved area to attend pharmacy classes from an accredited college soon.

The University of Charleston recently announced that it signed a Letter of Intent in December to make way for a move that will bring its pharmacy school to the Midway College Paintsville location.

As of the signing of the Letter of Intent, both schools began looking into how the move might affect both UC and the Midway College of Paintsville. In January, both parties agreed that the relationship and expansion of the pharmacy school program would be beneficial for students, but were still looking at the details and potential outcomes of the deal.

The Letter of Intent initiated a two-month period during which the schools could consider their respective risks and gains, as well as seek approval from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education to carry out the proposal if the schools found it feasible.

The purpose for considering the proposal on the part of Midway College was clear: to make way for rural parts of Kentucky to have access to a program such as the pharmacy school at University of Charleston. For University of Charleston, it could mean more enrollments and accessing more of their potential students in the region.

The sixty day consideration period ended on the 29th and no decisions had been made about the proposal, however.  The purpose of the consideration period was to determine the feasibility of opening the pharmacy school at Midway, especially in terms of faculty support and academic strength of the program.

On the deadline date, the parties still seemed undecided about the financial viability of the program, however. It is still unclear if opening the new pharmacy school might adversely affect the program taking place on UC’s own campus.
