Pharmacy School Adds Pharmaceutical Sciences Degree

A pharmacy school in Boston will soon offer a bachelors degree in pharmaceutical sciences to provide more opportunities to pharmacy students interested in the discipline.

Northeastern University’s School of Pharmacy made the decision after recognizing that there is a growing industry in pharmacy science disciplines that might cost them students in the long-run.

In the past, the school has offered the doctor of pharmacy degree (widely known as “Pharm. D.” in the United States) to students enrolled in classes at the university, but there was a need for more science related studies at the school. Students who wanted to delve into pharmaceutical sciences might have left the university to attend an appropriate program at another school.

Instead of allowing that to happen, the school of pharmacy decided to fulfill the needs of their students by offering the new degree program. A bachelors degree in the pharmacy science can allow students to also transfer into a Ph. D. or masters program after graduation from the program, which would further retention efforts.

The new degree program will also be attractive to students who excel at the core competencies of pharmaceutical sciences: math and science. Microbiology, calculus, chemistry, and other pharmacy classes are requirements of the Pharm. D. program at most schools, so transitioning to become an institution offering a bachelors in pharmaceutical sciences is obtainable in a short-term perspective.

There are some restrictions that students must understand to begin classes in the pharmacy school’s new program. According to a report by The Huntington, students need to maintain a 2.5 grade point average to enter the program and a 2.0 grade point average once they are in the program. Only students attending classes at the university are eligible for the advanced program, which will accommodate up to ten students for the first semester.
